What Travelling Is Teaching Me

Marcel Proust said, "the real voyage of discovery consists not in seeing new landscapes, but in having new eyes". Your perception of the world can be influenced by loads of different things: the media, your family, education etc.. For me, knowledge comes from experiences, how can I have a real perception of the World if I haven't really seen it? We all grow up in a bubble, we all have our different views and we are all ignorant to some extent. As a young black Muslim woman, I understand that travelling around the world is not the easiest thing to do but I think it is important to break out of our bubble and discover a new perspective. Travelling can break ignorance as you learn from others and others receive you.

Of course, not everyone is going to be as open-minded and welcoming as you would like. You might be stereotyped as an athlete because you are a tall black man. You might experience Islamophobia because you wear the hijab, you might be cat called or whistled at because you are a woman. Someone might want to take a picture with you because you are the first black person they have ever seen outside of the media. Whilst some of these situations are out of ignorance, others are a real problem in society today. I can only hope that in the future recreational travel is more diverse and open.
